Socio-economic Classification

 

General Rules for Socio-economic Classification
 

1.Classification according to the top level

It is important to note that in determining one's socio-economic status, the top level achieved is taken into account. For example, if the main income earner has retired and if he/she is currently working somewhere else, he/she has to be classified according to the highest level that he/she achieved in the past / today.

2.Unemployment

In case the main income earner is unemployed for more than 6 months, then he/she has to be classified according to his occupation in the past. Otherwise, he has to be classified as group E.

3.Illness

In case the main income earner is temporarily not working but still paid, he/she has to be classified according to his occupation prior to the illness. However, if he/she is unpaid, he/she has to be classified as group E.

4.Students

Students actively studying and living with their family are directly classified according to the main income earner of the household. However, in case they study away from home for most of the year, they have to be classified as group C1 (Temporary positions undertaken by students are not taken into account).

5.Widows

In case the main income earner is a widow and if he/she receives some form of income his/her deceased wife/husband, he/she has to be classified according to the occupation of his/her wife/husband in the past. However, in case they are working at a higher level, he/she is classified according to their own occupation.

6.Divorce

In case the main income earner has been divorced and receives alimony, and if he/she is not working at a higher level, he/she has to be classified according to his/her ex-husband/wife.

7.Retirement

If the main income earner has retired and receives a pension, he/she has to be classified according to his/her occupation in the past. However, if he/she is currently working, the classification should be done according to the top level. In case he/she gets only a very low state pension, then he/she can be classified as group E.

8.Domestic Servants

If the domestic servants are living in the house and receiving daily meals, then they are considered as a member of the household. In case they live in their own house, then they are classified according to their own occupation.
